Do You Need a New Electrical Panel to Charge a Kia EV at Home?
October 08 2026,
Home charging is the part of EV ownership that makes many Nova Scotia shoppers hesitate. The worry is usually the same: does my house need new electrical work before I can plug in a Kia?
The answer depends on your home, and there is a system built for homes with limited spare power. Here is what it does and what to line up before you arrange a charger.
What Kia’s Energy Management System Is
The EV Energy Management System, or EVEMS, works as a traffic controller for your home’s electricity. It is built with Variablegrid, a Canadian energy technology company, and it lets a Level 2 charger work with the power your house already has.
It is aimed at older homes that may not have enough electrical power to spare for fast Level 2 charging. Conventional installs in those homes often run into an electrical panel upgrade. EVEMS is designed to avoid that step.
The Kia home charging bundle pairs the EVEMS controller with the RS48 Level 2 charger. It comes in both J1772 and NACS connector configurations.
How Adaptive Power Works
The controller monitors your home’s energy use at all times. When an appliance turns on, it lowers the power going to the charger. When demand drops, it raises charging again. It makes these adjustments in 1-amp increments.
The result is that your Kia charges as fast as your home can safely allow, without overloading existing capacity. The controller adds just 10-15 minutes to a typical charger install.
One point matters here: EVEMS manages the power you have. It does not create new capacity. Skipping a panel upgrade is also different from skipping all electrical work. Permitting, wiring and a dedicated circuit are separate installation steps, and they still follow normal electrical requirements.
What the RS48 Charger Brings
The RS48 is a 48 A Level 2 charger with a 25 ft cable and a weather-resistant enclosure suitable for indoor or outdoor installation. It connects by hardwired ethernet for steady network access.
Through that connection you can:
- Set charging schedules for off-peak rates
- View real-time energy consumption statistics
- Control the charger remotely
The charger ships with an installation manual, a quick guide, and a support hotline for on-site installers.
Why It Matters for Ownership
A panel upgrade is the cost that can derail an EV plan. The Variablegrid approach is meant to remove that barrier for homes that qualify. Over half of homes in Canada can’t support Level 2 charging without expensive upgrades.
It can also speed things up. Installs avoid the weeks of waiting that electrical upgrades and utility approval can cause, leaving normal permitting and installation using your existing capacity.
You can add the bundle to your Kia purchase and finance it with your vehicle. A single point of contact handles your charging needs, and the bundle is discounted compared with buying the components separately.
Level 1 or Level 2 at Home
A Level 1 setup uses a household outlet through a portable charger, so it needs a suitable, properly grounded outlet. It needs little installation, but charging is slower. A dedicated Level 2 charger needs installation work, and it suits daily driving where you want the battery topped up each night.
The Variablegrid system targets the homes in between: those that want Level 2 convenience but have limited spare capacity.
Who Benefits Most
- Owners of older homes where the panel has little room to spare.
- Shoppers who want to finance charging with the vehicle.
- Drivers who want scheduled off-peak charging and remote control.
Not every home qualifies automatically. An electrician or installer assesses the panel, capacity and wiring, and local permitting applies.
Kia also offers Variablegrid Plus, a 3-year subscription that returns $0.10 per kWh for at-home charging, with an eligible Variablegrid charger required.
Your Next Step Toward Home Charging in Amherst
EVEMS lets a Level 2 charger use the capacity your home already has, and the RS48 bundle adds scheduling, remote control and energy tracking. Permitting and installation still apply, but a panel upgrade may not.
